How safe are you online?...with Lance Ulanoff
Don't leave your data behind:
Log out of your accounts on your computer and especially any other computers (say, at a hotel) when you’re done.
Beware of public networks (Starbucks, etc):
Use a VPN (encrypted tunnel): Express VPN, Hotspot Sheild, VyprVPN (most are not free, but still affordable)
Phishy emails from banks and other accounts:
Check the address (click on it to see the full thing)
Never click on links
Contact the service or bank directly
Manage your social network settings:
Facebook (new, simplified settings)
Adjust who can see your posts and if third parties have access to your app activities
Hide your personal info (or post less of it)
Control who can tag you in posts
Instagram…clear search history
Stop sharing your vacation photos in real-time:
If you go away, share the pics when you return. Otherwise, it's an open invite for burglars!
Make new and better passwords:
Use a password management tool like 1Password or LastPass
You need only remember a single strong Password
Alternatively, Google Chrome and Apple KeyChain will manage, suggest and fill in passwords for you
Learn how to use two-factor authentication:
It's not complicated. When signing into an account on a new, unknown device or hardware, the system will ask you to verify with a code sent to the phone you have in your hand. This prevents an unknown third party from signing into your account (they don’t have your phone, so they can't do it).
Make sure your phone has a pin, a gesture, fingerprint or face ID locking setup.
Block cookies
Use InPrivate or Incognito Browsing
Make sure your security software is up-to-date.
Microsoft Windows 10 actually has great built-in protections
Back up your data to a separate or cloud-based service
