What is socialization and best time to start? It’s the process of preparing a dog to enjoy interactions with other animals, people, places and activities. Critical in preventing fears, phobias and aggressions. The ideal time to socialize a puppy is between 3 and 14 weeks of age.
Let’s get started…how do we socialize puppies to objects & experiences? Ring doorbells, open and close umbrellas, pair loud sounds with treats. Practice touching them while they eat. Play with their paws and tails to orient them to future vet & groomer visits.
And what about socializing puppies to other humans, dogs and cats? For humans, the rule of thumb is 100 people in 100 days. You want to dog to think people are safe. For other dogs and puppies, structured playgroups. Get your puppy around well behaved adult dogs. For cats, use a baby gate so the two animals can feel comfortable. Offer treats.
Let’s talk newly adopted adult dogs…how can we teach them to socialize with humans? Anyone the dog meets, don’t let them approach head on. Dogs not comfortable being reached for over the top of their head. Approach dog at an angle. Let dog come forward and sniff. If this happens they can pet under the chin.
How can we get an adult dog socialized at home? First, learn their history if possible. Were there children, other dogs, abuse, etc. Let them sniff around, what rooms can they go in, are they allowed on the furniture? Let them know what they can chew. Start training right away.
